Basilica San Marco, Venice - With over two square kilometres of stunning mosaics, the Basilica of San Marco is one of the most famous sights associated with Venice. This vast church is truly spectacular, constructed on a Greek cross plan and crowned with five huge domes. Originally built as a shrine to St. Mark in the 9th century, it has been remodelled over the years, after being destroyed by fire and knocked down centuries ago. It is now the cities main cathedral and many public ceremonies take place here. Inside, a lift is available, which takes visitors to the top where there are fabulous panoramic views over the rooftops and lagoon. It is without doubt the city's number one sight, attracting enormous crowds, so it is advisable to get there early.
Canal Grande, Venice - The Grand Canal in Venice is an amazing stretch of water and it is often referred to as 'the most beautiful street in the city'. Travelling along the historic canal is a great way to see some of the city's most breathtaking and flamboyant architecture. Accademia Gallery, Venice - The Accademia Gallery is home to the city's single most impressive art collection, with many stunning and well-displayed paintings. With astounding masterpieces from the 14th century to the 18th century by world-famous artists, such as Bellini, Giorgione, Rosalba Carriera and Veronese, to name but a few. The Venice Accademia remains one of the most prestigious and outstanding art galleries in Italy. Founded in the 18th century the Accademia Gallery began its life as a Venice 'School of Painting' and moved to its current location on the Campo della Carità at the beginning of the 19th century, where it continues to draw the crowds.
Venice Gardens, Verona - One of the country's finest Renaissance gardens, the Giardino Giusti was laid out in 1580. The gorgeous formal gardens of clipped hedges, topiary, potted plants and statues contrast well with the upper area of natural woodland. These two very different areas are linked by stone terracing. The gardens are open daily and you won't be dissapointed with your visit.
